Britam invests in water projects and tree planting for two primary schools

Britam has invested in a clean water initiative targeting two primary schools in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as part of efforts to expand climate-resilient infrastructure and improve access to safe water in public institutions. This initiative is part of Britam’s wider programme under Britam Foundation, the Corporate Social Investment arm of Britam Group.

The project, implemented in partnership with engineering firm Davis & Shirtliff, has installed solar-powered water pumping systems at Uhuru Mchanganyiko Primary School in Ilala and Mshikamano Primary School in Kivule. As part of the environmental initiative, tree planting activities were also conducted at Mshikamano Primary School.

Britam Tanzania Chief Executive Officer, Farai Dogo stated that the initiative addresses both social and environmental challenges while reducing reliance on unstable electricity supply.

Leoncia Makubo, Marketing Manager at Britam said the systems were completed after a feasibility study carried out in May 2025 across several schools.

The solar-powered systems are expected to benefit more than 10,000 people including pupils, teachers and surrounding communities.

At Mshikamano Primary School, the project supports daily operations and improves hygiene conditions while reinforcing environmental awareness.

At Uhuru Mchanganyiko Primary School, the initiative improves inclusive education access including support for pupils with disabilities.

The use of solar pumping technology reduces carbon emissions and lowers operational costs compared to diesel and grid systems.
